Spray Pads

spray-pads-london

The weather has definitely taken a turn for the better! It’s hard to believe that we had snow only a few short weeks ago when the sun is this warm and gorgeous. And while backyard pools may be opening, most outdoor aquatic activities are still on hold for a little bit longer – except for one! In one week today, on Saturday, May 16 the City of London spray pads open for the season!

Spray pads are fun places for kids to get wet, play, splash, and be silly without standing water and all of the risks that come with it. They are elaborate sprinkler systems! With the touch of a button, water will spray, drip, dump, shoot, pour, and jet out of various areas in rotation. The spray pads are suitable for all ages (with supervision!) and can be accessed by all. Spray pads are slowly beginning to replace a lot of the wading pools within the city because they use less water to operate (used on demand vs filled daily) and do not require a lifeguard.

Spray pads are FREE and will operate from 9:00am to 9:00pm daily until Labour Day weekend.

There are 12 city operated spray pads which can be seen on a map HERE.

This Weekend in London

APRIL

The good news is: there’s no more snow in the forecast. The better news is: it’s almost the weekend. Here is what is happening in our fine city this weekend!

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP DAY

To finish off the week of Earth Day celebrations, London Clean and Green is hosting a Community Clean Up Day on Saturday, April 25. There are many locations across the city that you can join and pitch in! Pick up litter, plant trees, remove graffiti and have some fun. Bring the kids and get the whole family involved in making our city beautiful. If you can’t make it to one of the scheduled clean up locations, clean up your own neighbourhood a little bit. Just remember to stay safe and watch for sharp things.

TOONIE SWIM

This Friday, April 24 is one of the City of London’s three monthly toonie swims. Head over to Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre from 7:30 to 9:00pm with your family and pay only $2 per person for admission.

FOREST CITY ROAD RACE

The annual Forest City Road Race is this Sunday, April 26. There is still time to register for this event, although online registration ends tonight, April 23 at 6:00pm.  Bring the kids for the Kids Fun Run or challenge yourself with the 5K, 10K or half-marathon events. 100% of the proceeds raised at the FCRR go toward programs at Thames Valley Children’s Centre. If you aren’t going to the race, but have any business in the downtown or old north London areas on Sunday morning, be advised that there will be delays and detours.

STORYBOOK GARDENS

Storybook Gardens is open for the spring season with some fun new things for the kids! Check out the Peddle Car Track and Felix the Fox Archery from 11:00am to 3:00pm. The castle is open 10:00am to 5:00pm Saturdays and Sundays through April.

HOME DEPOT WORKSHOP

Have you been considering upgrading your flooring? The Home Depot is hosting a workshop this Sunday, April 26 at 1:00pm on installing laminate flooring. Learn how to cut and lay the flooring, what tools you will need, how to undercut door jams, and lots of useful tips on how to make flooring easier.

Bowling Fun in London

bowling

The weather is bitter, the snow is still coming, and March Break is coming up. If you are getting cabin fever and are looking for something to do with the kids, try bowling! A lot of the alleys in London these days are not like they were back when we were kids. You can easily jump from bowling to other fun activities – make a whole afternoon of it! This is great family fun for all ages.

BOLERAMA ROYALE

This is classic bowling at it’s best! Bowlerama offers great deals on games and shoe rentals, as well as Cosmic Bowling, darts, pool, and giant TVs to watch sports when you need a little distraction. They have active bowling leagues for juniors, seniors and adults if you discover that one of you has a talent for the sport! Bowlerama is located on Dundas Street east, between Clarke Road and Veteran’s Memorial Parkway.

FLEETWAY

Fleetway has everything! Five and ten pin bowling, 18 holes of glow golf, a 40 foot rock climbing wall, Playdium Lite games room, and 14 billiard tables. And DAIRY QUEEN, which just seals the deal, doesn’t it? They have great rates and March Break specials happening all week. At Fleetway, they strive to be inclusive and accessible for all guests. If someone in your family has special needs that aren’t being met be sure to check in with staff to see how they can accommodate you. Their facility is fully wheelchair accessible, including the glow golf and bowling lanes (but not rock climbing – those wheels need to stay on the ground!). Fleetway is an alcohol-free facility. Fleetway is located on Proudfoot Lane, just east of the Oxford and Wonderland intersection.

PALASAD

Palasad has two locations: south by Wonderland and Southdale Roads and north at Oxford and Adelaide. You can choose from ten pin bowling, billiards, ping pong, karaoke, arcade, and even laser tag at the south location. Palasad is also known for it’s restaurant with the wood-fired thin crust pizza, so come hungry. With their large selection of domestic and craft beers on tap, as well as imported and Ontario wines, you may want to leave the kids at home and make this a date night venue instead! Palasad also has special rates for all of March Break.

Toonie Swims

Toonie-Swim-Web

Did you know that every month the City of London Aquatics offer a scheduled swim at each of their indoor pools for only a toonie? What a great deal! The dates and times vary each month and are announced in advance on Facebook, Twitter, and the City of London website.

January is almost over, but there is one last swim for this month TONIGHT at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre from 7:30pm to 9pm. Grab your suits and towels and get the weekend started with a splash!
